There are 3 scheduled flights between Vancouver International Airport and Smithers Airport (Air Canada, www.aircanada.com Hawk Air, www.hawkair.com). If you are planning to book an international flight into Vancouver, a connecting flight up to Smithers shouldn't cost you more than $200 CDN (return).

You can catch a ferry from Port Hardy, Vancouver Island to Prince Rupert = Inside Passage (www.bcferries.bc.ca) and spend 14 hrs on the ocean, or else coming down from Alaska on the ferry (Juneau or Skagway) to Prince Rupert (www.alaska-ferries.com, Alaska Marine Highway tel. 907 - 465 3946) - maybe you’ll be lucky and see some whales travelling to their breeding grounds.

The very scenic train ride from Prince Rupert (www.viarail.ca) to Smithers takes about 7 hrs and leads you along the fabulous Skeena and Bulkley River. The train leaves Prince Rupert every Wednesday, Friday or Sunday morning. Coming from Prince George the train leaves at 7.45 in the morning every Monday, Thursday or Saturday.

If you can take your time to drive up from Vancouver you will find many interesting stops along the way, and you will observe how the landscape changes slowly to become that overwhelming mountain country.
